About this word counter

This counter updates live as you type, reporting total words, characters with spaces, characters excluding whitespace, sentences, paragraphs, and estimated reading time. It reads the current textarea value with the browser's Intl.Segmenter API; ordinary page requests, browser extensions, and managed-device services are separate from that tool operation.

Unicode word segmentation and Intl.Segmenter

Traditional word counting splits on whitespace characters, which works adequately for most Latin-script languages but fails for scripts like Chinese, Japanese, Thai, and Khmer that do not separate words with spaces. The ECMAScript Internationalization API's Intl.Segmenter class uses Unicode Standard Annex #29 (UAX #29) word-boundary rules and locale-specific rules to identify word-like segments in any supported language. This produces more linguistically meaningful counts for multilingual documents, technical content with URLs and code identifiers, and text containing emoji clusters that consist of multiple Unicode code points.

Reading time estimation and the 225 WPM baseline

The reading-time estimate divides the current word-like segment count by 225 and rounds upward. It is a planning figure, not a measured reading duration; different audiences, text types, browser segmentation versions, and destination-platform rules can produce different results.

Worked word-count example

The sentence CZOA tools work in your browser. contains six Unicode word-like segments, 32 user-perceived characters including spaces and punctuation, and one sentence under this tool's rules.

A 900-word article is estimated at about four minutes when divided by 225 words per minute and rounded up.

Counts are rules, not universal facts

Editors and platforms may treat hyphenated terms, contractions, emoji, abbreviations, CJK text, and line breaks differently. Use the count shown by the destination platform when a contractual or application limit is strict.

Common word-count mistakes

  • Confusing characters with characters excluding spaces.
  • Assuming every language separates words with whitespace.
  • Using an estimated reading time as a guarantee for every audience.
  • Leaving hidden formatting in copied text and comparing it with a plain-text editor.

How to use it

  1. Paste or type plain text into the editor.
  2. Read the live word, character, sentence, and reading-time totals.
  3. Compare the relevant metric with the limit used by the destination platform.
  4. Clear the editor when finished; this removes the value from the tool workspace on this page.

Frequently asked questions

What does this counter measure?+

It uses `Intl.Segmenter` on the current textarea value to count word-like segments, grapheme clusters, sentences, nonblank paragraphs, characters excluding whitespace, and estimated reading minutes.

What local example can I run?+

Enter `CZOA tools work in your browser.`. It reports 6 words, 32 characters, 27 characters without whitespace, 1 sentence, 1 paragraph, and 1 min.

How is reading time calculated?+

A nonzero word count is divided by 225 words per minute and rounded upward. Empty text reports 0 minutes.

Is this a grammar or readability check?+

No. Counts follow the browser segmentation implementation and can differ from an editor or destination platform for CJK text, punctuation, emoji, and line breaks.
