About this utm builder

A UTM builder appends standardized campaign tracking parameters to a destination URL. The builder validates and percent-encodes the currently entered values in this page's workspace; ordinary site requests, extensions, and requests made after a copied URL is used are separate paths.

What each UTM parameter does

utm_source identifies the referring publisher or platform (for example: newsletter, google, or linkedin). utm_medium describes the marketing channel such as email, cpc, social, or display. utm_campaign names the specific initiative or promotion. utm_term records a paid keyword for search campaigns, and utm_content distinguishes creative variants, placements, or distinct call-to-action links within the same campaign. Source, medium, and campaign are required by most platforms; term and content are optional and most useful in paid search and creative A/B tests.

Worked UTM example

A newsletter links to https://example.com/pricing. Use newsletter as the source, email as the medium, and summer_launch as the campaign.

The result ends with ?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=summer_launch.

If the landing URL already contains a query string, the builder preserves it and appends UTM parameters with an ampersand rather than overwriting existing values.

Choose names that stay useful

Maintain a shared vocabulary document: always write email rather than alternating among email, newsletter, and e-mail. The recommended naming mode converts labels to lowercase with underscores so campaign reports stay clean and filterable. Preserve mode keeps intentional case and spaces when an established taxonomy requires it; URL-encoded spaces may appear as + in some analytics exports.

Common UTM mistakes

  • UTM values appear in browser history, server logs, referrer headers, and every analytics platform that processes the URL—never put email addresses, user IDs, or personal data in parameters.
  • Tagging internal navigation overwrites the visitor's original acquisition source and corrupts channel attribution.
  • Inconsistent capitalization or spelling splits one channel into multiple fragmented report rows.
  • Always open the finished link in a private browser tab and verify the destination and all parameters survive any redirects before publishing.

How to use it

  1. Enter the final landing-page URL, including https:// and any existing query values.
  2. Add a consistent source, medium, and campaign name, then choose normalized or preserved naming.
  3. Use term for paid keywords and content for a creative or placement only when needed.
  4. Copy the result, open it in a private tab, and confirm the destination and analytics parameters.

Frequently asked questions

How does UTM Builder construct a campaign URL?+

It parses an HTTP or HTTPS landing-page URL, preserves unrelated query parameters and the fragment, then sets utm_source, utm_medium, and utm_campaign. It sets optional utm_term and utm_content only when those fields are nonblank, replacing existing UTM values with the visible inputs.

Which UTM Builder controls change the result?+

Landing page URL, campaign source, medium, and name are required; term and content are optional. Normalize converts each UTM value to lowercase and replaces runs of whitespace with underscores. Preserve trims the ends but keeps entered case and internal spaces. Load sample fills a worked example, and Copy copies the displayed URL.

Which invalid inputs and limits does UTM Builder handle?+

A missing required campaign field, malformed URL, or scheme other than HTTP or HTTPS returns an error instead of a campaign URL. Blank optional fields remove existing utm_term or utm_content. The builder does not advertise a fixed character limit, so very long URLs should be checked against the destination and browser limits before use.

Does UTM Builder send campaign values to a server?+

The builder constructs and displays the URL in the browser. Acceptance monitoring records no request body containing the entered landing URL or UTM values. Opening a copied result later sends a request to that destination and is outside the builder operation.
