Fails with descriptive line and column diagnostics when encountering unquoted object keys, single-quoted strings (in strict JSON mode), trailing commas (in RFC 8259 mode), or unescaped ASCII control codes (0x00 through 0x1F). Objects with circular self-references are intercepted by identity tracking sets before serialization begins. Input size is bounded by browser memory (typically 50-100 MB).

How does JSON Flatten and Unflatten choose its mode?+
It parses the primary value as a JSON or YAML object and reads the secondary field lowercased. Exactly unflatten selects path expansion; every other secondary value selects flattening.
What does the nested-object fixture return?+
Flattening {"user":{"name":"Ada"},"active":true} returns JSON with user.name set to Ada and active retained as true. The values are not converted to display strings.
Which JSON shapes are rejected?+
The root must be a non-array object. Empty path parts, dotted source keys, and __proto__, prototype, or constructor segments are rejected to keep generated paths safe.
What does unflattening not infer?+
It does not reconstruct arrays, preserve original key ordering, merge conflicting paths, infer types from text, or accept an arbitrary dotted-key convention beyond the implemented object path rules.
