IPv4 and IPv6 CIDR Subnet Calculation Best Practices

Classless Inter-Domain Routing (CIDR) replaced legacy classful networking (Class A/B/C) to allow flexible subnet allocation. Accurately sizing subnets prevents network exhaustion and routing loops.

1. Binary Masking Mechanics

An IPv4 address consists of 32 bits. A prefix of /24 indicates that the first 24 bits are dedicated to the network prefix, leaving 8 bits for host addressing (2^8 = 256 total addresses).

In traditional RFC 791 networking, the first address (.0) is reserved as the Network ID and the final address (.255) as the Broadcast Address, leaving 254 usable hosts.

Network: 192.168.1.0/24
Netmask: 255.255.255.0 (11111111.11111111.11111111.00000000)
First: 192.168.1.1
Last: 192.168.1.254
Broadcast: 192.168.1.255

2. Cloud Provider Caveat (AWS / GCP / Azure)

Notice: Modern cloud VPC subnets reserve five addresses per subnet: .0 (Network), .1 (VPC Router), .2 (DNS Server), .3 (Future use), and .255 (Broadcast). Plan capacity accordingly.

Summary & Best Practices

Precision in subnetting safeguards internal network topologies and ensures smooth enterprise cloud migration.
